Frequently Asked Questions

What affects internet speeds?

Every broadband connection is unique, and various factors can influence your internet speed. Here are the most common ones:

Connection/Broadband Type: The type of connection you have plays a crucial role in the speed that reaches your home. For instance, if your connection relies on older copper wiring, like ADSL or Fibre Broadband, your speed may be reduced due to the transition between fibre and copper or the length of the copper wiring.

Distance from Cabinet (Green Street Box) and/or Exchange: The further your house is from the street cabinet or exchange, the more distance the broadband signal has to cover, increasing the likelihood of interference. This is not an issue with Full Fibre (FTTP) connections, as fibre optic cables maintain their speed over distance, unlike traditional copper wiring.

Router Positioning and Distance: The placement of your router can significantly affect your internet performance. Try to position it close to the devices you use most, with no obstructions. In larger or older homes with thicker walls, consider using a Wi-Fi booster.

Time of Day and Number of Users/Devices: The number of users and devices in your household, as well as peak usage times in your area, can impact your speed. Busy households and peak times, such as evenings, can result in slower speeds.

What broadband speed do I need?

The broadband speed you need depends on the size of your household, the number of users, and how you use the internet. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right speed for your home:

Around 10Mb: Suitable for light internet usage, this speed is ideal for 1-2 people who primarily browse the web or use social media. It’s often more affordable but may struggle with activities like gaming or streaming.

Around 30-60Mb: This range is better for households with more users, higher usage, and multiple devices. However, larger households where gaming and streaming are frequent may still benefit from higher speeds.

60Mb+: Speeds of 60Mb and above can handle almost anything, including gaming and streaming. Large households of 4 or more people will find these speeds provide a quicker and better overall experience.
